About Robert and Ana Maria
Ana Maria was born Ana Maria Bernin in 1948 in the town of Eldorado, Misiones, Argentina. Her father was Swedish and her mother is of Danish descent. Her family were early pioneers in that part of Argentina and are remembered in the town's Social History Museum. In 1974 she married Robert Gomez and in 1977 they moved to the UK, where they have been living ever since. She speaks several languages and for many years co-managed a successful translation company
Ana Maria is an athlete of some repute having represented Argentina at Basketball. For a few years she also played for one of the top Spanish teams participating in a number of international events. She is no stranger to long-distance walking. In 2010 she walked with her husband Robert from Gibraltar to La Corunna in northern Spain, a total distance of over 1600 kms. She was only the second woman ever to achieve this. In 2015 she walked from Alicante to Cape Finisterre a distance of around 1300 kms.
Robert was born in 1945 in Gibraltar of Gibraltarian parents and moved to the UK briefly in 1968. Two years later he moved to Brazil and Argentina, where he met Ana Maria. During a long business career he held the posts of Principal, Customer Services (Europe) at the United California Bank London, Assistant Controller (South America) at Grolier Inc. New York, Deputy Group Managing Director at the Thomas Jourdan Group in London, was a non-executive director of the Mary Quant Group of Companies, Secretary General, Alzheimer's Disease International and later worked as a consultant to the AEEU. He formed part of the advisory group of the Specialist Schools Trust set up under the Tony Blair administration under the chairmanship of Sir Cyril Taylor. He retired in 2000. Since 2007 he has participated with Ana Maria in a number of long-distance walks including those detailed above.
In his youth he was senior stroke at the Mediterranean Rowing Club and played hockey both at local and international level.
Robert and Ana Maria have two children and three grandchildren, Hal, Austin and Magnus to all of whom this walk is dedicated, in the hope that one day they be may be inspired to follow these footprints.
