Aosta - Nus - 13Kms
This morning we did our last bit of sightseeing - a fantastic Cryptoportico one of only two such Roman constructions in Italy. Following this I had my appointment with the dentist which took longer than anticipated and we were not able to set off until 12:30pm. That was after I picked myself up from the floor after I got the dentist's bill which was huge even after they had applied a 20% discount because we were doing the Via Francígena! And on top of this they had the cheek to give us two toothbrushes as a going away gift! Oh well, as my dear father would have said "it's only money"!
Our plans to walk to Châtillon had to be shelved and we walked to Nus instead. Basically we have now lost a day, which I am sure we can make up along the way to Rome. We left Aosta through the Praetorian Gate, The Arch of Augustus from 25 BC and later walked over a Roman bridge first built at the end of the first century BC. I must say that this beautiful city is steeped in Roman history. As we were so late starting we decided to try and go a faster route which entailed a lot of walking along minor roads. The weather was fine with a strong head wind. At one point we stopped to say hello to a farmer, Giorgio, who invited us into his orchard where we ate a lot of raspberries, strawberries and Tayberries! A nice interlude in an otherwise pretty boring day.
Tomorrow we continue to Châtillon.
