Resting in Aosta
We woke up as usual very early but it was nice not to have to get up straight away. I regret to say I'm suffering from a bad cold, no doubt from getting wet yesterday! After a leisurely breakfast we went for a walk. As we neared the main square in town we bumped into Peter and Johanna with their daughter and her husband who were just on their way to Chatillon, the next leg of our journey.
We then went to see the various sights this lovely town has to offer. The town was founded in 25 B.C. and named Augusta Praetoria. Some of the city walls still stand today including its imposing Praetorian Gate, which in Roman times was the main access into the city, the southern facade of its Roman Theatre, and parts of the Roman Forum and Cryptoporticus. Two other main sights the Arch of Augustus and a Roman bridge we will see tomorrow as that is on our route out of the city.
The Cathedral, and the Saint Orso Collegiate church were also worth visiting with frescoes from the years 900 to 1050, making Aosta one of the main art centres of the Ottonian period.
At lunch disaster struck and I have an appointment with the dentist tomorrow at 10:00am. This is going to delay our start tomorrow so we may have to do a shorter walk than the 29kms we planned. But then, that is the way of this Camino!
Another donation came in today, bringing us that little closer to our target ( which incidentally we hope to exceed!). Thank you so much Mel and Brenda!
