UPDATE

Apologies for not being able to post daily.  We have found that the signal in the countryside is very poor and makes it difficult if not impossible to post here.  Doing so hear is more complicated than posting on our Facebook page which we can do more easily.   From Bapaume we travelled to Peronne, Trefcon, Seracourt le Grand, Tergnier and Cessieres where we were yesterday.  Along the Pas de Calais and the Somme region we have been visiting many British and Commonwealth Cemeteries as well as the National Necropolis in Rancourt where 8400 young Frenchmen are buried. May they rest in peace.

The past few days have been hard but enjoyable. Yesterday walking along canals and today through country lanes and woods. Last night we stayed at a CH (Chambres D'Hotes = B&B) in Cessieres which was by far our best stay to date. Jacqueline Dru looked after us so well we didn't really want to go! Just look at the breakfast we got! Today we carried on to Cheret, stopping in Laon, town situated on an impressive ridge which is two Kms long and which boasts an impressive Cathedral. It is too far to walk up to the town so we looked for the bus station. An elderly gentleman insisted on accompanying us all the way there while we chatted about his younger days backpacking through Europe. He has been to Gibraltar twice. It's a small world! A beautiful walk today through woods, muddy and almost impassable in places, but very beautiful. We are following a European GR route which have red and white marking. As you will see in one of these photos these are sometimes difficult to spot! We have changed our plans for the next few days and we are going to try to squeeze three days walking into two so that we arrive in Rheims a day early and we can then take a day's rest there. Fingers crossed! Tonight we sleep in an imposing mansion which has seen better days and now offers four bedrooms on B&B. We are the only ones here. It is nice and peaceful. Thank you all for following us on our journey and for continuing to donate to our cause, the National Deaf Children's Society. The latest to donate, our Canadian friends Phil and Miriam. Many thanks dear friends.
